Morgan Leigh Mitchell

Obituary On the evening of July 2, 2014, Morgan passed away at St. John Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma after a 7-year battle with cancer. Morgan was 19 years old, and was surrounded by her friends and family. Morgan was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 5, 1994. She was the second daughter of Marva Jean and Jerry Bert Mitchell, Jr. Morgan loved to compete, participating in numerous sports including soccer, baseball, basketball and cheerleading. In the 6th grade, she even played tackle football and was the only girl on the team. She won the statewide NFL Punt, Pass & Kick contest that year, and represented Oklahoma at the regional competition in Dallas. When cancer prevented her from continuing with basketball, she joined the track team and threw shot put. Although she had never thrown shot put before, she excelled at it and placed 2nd in numerous track meets across the state. When she could no longer throw shot put, she joined the Coweta High School Golf Team and immediately fell in love with this sport as well. Her passion for sports continued as a fan of the Tulsa Shock and Oklahoma City Thunder basketball teams. She was also a huge fan of Oklahoma State University, and through the OSU Coaches vs. Cancer program was able to meet and befriend athletes from the football, basketball, softball and tennis teams. The coaches, players and students of OSU gave their time and energy to make Morgan (along with many other cancer kids) feel like part of the team, and learned a lesson in strength and courage from these amazing kids. Morgan was actively involved with children's cancer programs, particularly The Cavett Kids Foundation. She attended their summer camps, and even went on several Cavett ski trips to Colorado. Morgan loved to encourage the younger children at these cancer camps, entertaining them with skits, music and her positive attitude. Morgan graduated from Coweta High School in 2013, and was active in numerous activities during her Senior year. During the football season, she played drums in the Coweta Marching Band at halftime, then donned the mascot uniform to perform as T.J. the Tiger for the rest of the game. She was elected Homecoming Queen, and rode in the Coweta Fall Festival as the Grand Marshall and Senior Class Queen. In the Spring, her classmates elected her Prom Queen, and she walked hand-in-hand through graduation with her best friend, Baylie Diffee. Morgan's love for life, and her faith in God, were a testament to everyone who knew her. While her time with us was far too brief, the impact she made on those around her will live for generations. She was a shining example of God's love, wisdom and strength. Morgan's family would like to thank Dr. Gregory Kirkpatrick, and all of the doctors and nurses at The Children's Hospital at Saint Francis for the compassion, kindness, and outstanding care they provided Morgan during her battle with cancer. Morgan was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Martin and Patty Spears of Eureka, Kansas. Morgan is survived by her parents Jerry (Mick) and Marva Mitchell of Broken Arrow; and her sisters Patty and Bailey, both of Broken Arrow. She also leaves behind her paternal grandparents Jerry and Dixie Mitchell of Broken Arrow; her aunts and uncles Frank and Martina Tatum of Wagoner, Kevin Mitchell of Tulsa, and Steven and Karen Mitchell of Tulsa. She is also survived by her cousins Mallory Tatum, Mikaela Duncan, Mathan Tatum, Jake Mitchell, Olivia Mitchell, and her beloved Godson, Henry Mitchell. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Wright-Brown Family Funeral Home in Coweta. A viewing will be held at the Coweta Assembly of God Church from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2014. The funeral will be held on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the same church, with the burial immediately following.
